Professional teeth whitening
A painless and simple cosmetic dental procedure — whitening the teeth involves getting rid of any
stains and discolouration that has built up over time.
From dazzling whites to even, natural creams, professional tooth whitening with the help of a
dentist can make a startling change to your smile.
Over the counter, vs professional
teeth whitening treatments
Unlike teeth whitening kits bought from a pharmacy, whitening gel provided by a
dentist contains a higher concentration of hydrogen peroxide — the bleaching agent
used to whiten your teeth. As a result, you should see the effects quicker.
Monitored home
whitening treatment
The two most common methods used to whiten teeth are in-chair whitening treatments
and monitored at-home treatments.
At Keppel Dental we provide monitored at-home whitening treatments because:
- It’s more affordable
- Treatment is non-invasive
- It’s safer and healthier for teeth and gums
- Convenience — trays can be worn at times that fit with your schedule
- It’s less fuss compared to ‘in-chair whitening’ treatments which still
requires monitored at-home whitening (as well) to achieve a
long-term result.
When done right, the outcome of at-home and in-chair whitening are exactly the same. But should you ever need a whitening touch up, the monitored at-home treatment plan will continue to deliver results at a more economical price.
How it works
Lyndsey, a dentist at Keppel Dental, says:
“Some teeth whitening agents can cause tooth and gum sensitivity. They
should be used with caution under the guidance of a dentist. The first
step is an oral health check-up and consultation to discuss the best treatment plan for you.
Next, moulds are taken of your upper and lower teeth. From the moulds we make
trays specific to the shape of your mouth and teeth. Not only are they comfortable to
wear, but each tray holds the prescribed bleaching gel against the teeth, while
minimising unwanted (and sometimes uncomfortable) contact with gums.
During your appointment your dentist will explain exactly how to apply the gel and fit
the trays. You can then carry out the treatment at your convenience.
Between applications (roughly every one to two weeks), you’ll see your dentist so
they can monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
Expect to see visible changes in the colour of teeth in as little as
seven days.”
How long do the effects
of teeth whitening last?
The combination of a personalised plan and professional teeth whitening products means the
effects can last for years. To help prolong the vividness of your pearly whites take extra
action, like brushing and flossing; cutting down on cigarettes if you smoke; and reducing
exposure to teeth-staining food and drinks such as tea, coffee, red wine and dark coloured
fruits and vegetables.
These practices will help, but it’s important to realise that the effects of tooth whitening don’t
last forever. To maintain a bright smile, you will need to repeat the treatment. Simply make
another appointment to see your dentist and they will reassess your tooth whitening plan and
advise you further.
