What is digital dentistry?
Digital dentistry describes the machines and computer-based technologies that assist dentists in taking great care of you. Used in every stage of the oral health care process, they:
- help with diagnostics
- increase accuracy when planning treatments
- present images of treatment outcomes and results
- mill the materials needed to complete your treatment.
We’re self-confessed nerds when it comes to dental technology
Dental technology has two important jobs. Firstly, it assists the dentist so it’s quicker and easier for you to get the treatment you need. Secondly, it helps make sure you’re as comfortable as possible as we gather information and carry out treatments.
We want our treatment chairs to be pleasant places to be. So we’ve furnished our regional practice with equipment that’s at the forefront of digital dentistry technology, including:
★ 3Shape Trios Intraoral Scanners
★ a CAD/CAM suite for 3D printing and milling
★ an orthopantomography (OPG)/ computed tomography (CT) x-ray machine
★ a RAYFace 3D desktop facial scanner that creates a 3D avatar of your face in a matter of seconds.
With the help of this kit we can
Complete crown and bridge work
In 2-3 days, rather than weeks
Make and print surgical guides
For safer, more precise implant procedures
Design and make dental splints
Grinding and clenching guards measured, made and fitted
Design and mill full sets of dentures
In 1-2 weeks rather than a month.
Create detailed and accurate smile make over images
See what your smile will look like after any form of cosmetic dental treatment.
How it works
Luke, a dentist at Keppel Dental, says:
“Step one involves planning the dental care you need. Our digital equipment helps us to scan your mouth and
diagnose the challenges you’re facing. Then, with the results of your scans, we prepare the materials for your
treatment be it a new crown, bridge, implant, dentures or dental splint.
Each machine works a little differently. So we’ll select the ones that match your treatment needs. For example, the intraoral scanner involves moving a small wand camera around your teeth and gums to capture full-colour images in 10 minutes or less. This does away with the need for gooey impression trays.
We may only use the whole face scanner if you’re having a complex procedure, such as full-mouth dental implants or a complete smile makeover. Six cameras positioned on its arms and in the centre create a 3D avatar of your face in a matter of seconds. We merge these images with the 3D scans of your teeth and gums and voila! We’ve got an accurate image of your entire face.”
The convenience of creating crowns on site
Crowns and implants made at Keppel Dental mean your treatment is completed sooner. Previously, it could take anywhere between one and four weeks for an offsite supplier to complete crown work. Now, using the 3D imaging and printing we can mill ready-to-use resin and zirconia crowns in just 1-3 days.
If your stay in Yeppoon is short, you can see us on a Friday and your crown can be ready and fitted by Monday.
